Sunflower stalks

June 9, 2016

I measure the weight of my love
by what I sacrifice for it –
the only home I had ever known
for a new love.
My poetry for my daughter.

Over eleven years,
I get drunk on monogamy
crack my tooth on loneliness
fracture a femur on a rainbow
heal a scar by swallowing solitude
shed my skin on a sunflower stalk
cradle a hen
sing a lullaby to a sunrise.

Over eleven years,
my love leads me home.
My daughter leads me to poetry.
